Tensions surrounding the playoff series between the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres escalated Wednesday night after a disturbing incident involving visiting fans in Buffalo after Game 1.

Following the Sabres’ victory on home ice, a group of Canadiens supporters known as HFTV on social media reportedly became the target of an assault outside the arena. According to the group, several fans were spat on and physically confronted by an individual following the game.

The situation quickly drew attention online after videos of the altercation began circulating on social media.

Buffalo police reportedly arrived on scene shortly after the incident, and the individual involved was issued a ban from the Sabres’ arena. But despite reportedly having strong video evidence available, HFTV ultimately decided not to file a formal complaint.

That decision came as a surprise to many following the seriousness of the accusations.

In an official statement, the group explained that they viewed the altercation as an isolated incident and did not want it to overshadow what has otherwise been an electric playoff series.

“I don’t want this event to define what should be a wonderful series,” a spokesperson for the collective reportedly stated.

HFTV also emphasized that Sabres fans are generally welcomed respectfully when visiting Montreal and expressed hope that same culture would continue on both sides of the rivalry moving forward.

Still, the incident has reignited discussion around fan safety during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, especially for visiting supporters traveling into hostile environments. Friendly trash talk is part of playoff hockey: physical confrontations are not.

With Game 2 set for tonight in Buffalo before the series shifts to Montreal, many fans will now be paying closer attention both on and off the ice.
