Auston Matthews attempts to explain brutal loss in Game 7.
The captain of the Maple Leafs faces the music after an ugly loss in Game 7.
The Maple Leafs were booed out of their own building by their own fans on Sunday night after putting up a stinker in what was tied for the most lopsided loss on home ice in the history of Game 7s in the National Hockey League.
There will be a ton of fallout from not only losing this series but perhaps more importantly the manner in which they lost that series, but much of that will have to wait until the summer. Immediately following the loss however several members of the Maple Leafs were tasked with facing the media, including captain Auston Matthews.
Matthews attempted to explain the loss when asked by reporters.
"I don't know," admitted Matthews. "First period I thought they came out a little bit hungrier than us, I thought the last half of that period we got our game going. I don't know how it got away from us... just not on the same page in different areas of the game."
Matthews was then asked point blank if he was tired of repeating the same cycle seemingly on an endless loop and he answered rather honestly.
"Yeah I am," admitted Matthews. "I think we all are. I think there's 31 teams that go home very disappointed and obviously we are one of them... it's not a great feeling."
Matthews was also asked about any potential injuries, something that many suspected may have limited his ability to play in this series, but he declined to comment on the topic.
"I'm not really gonna address that right now," said Matthews. "You go out there and just try to compete and give your all and that's what I was trying to do."
While Matthews appeared to be genuine in his responses unfortunately I think it will do little to diminish the incredible amount of frustration being felt by the Maple Leafs fan base at this time.
