Auston Matthews contract extension incoming.

It sure sounded like the star forward himself announced his contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs when he posted on social media late on Wednesday afternoon :

“I feel fortunate to continue this journey as a Maple Leaf in front of the best fans in hockey! I will do everything I can to help get us to the top of the mountain. GLG! “

The Maple Leafs confirmed on Wednesday that they had inked Matthews to four-year extension worth a reported $53 million ($13.25 million AAV). Toronto was looking to sign him to a maximum-term extension, but the superstar opted for a shorter term.

Matthews' career earnings will be $114 million before his 31st birthday. Prior to today, Matthews had inked two deals worth a total value of $69,520,000 since being drafted first overall by Toronto in 2016.

Matthews put up 40 goals and 45 assists in 74 games in 2022-23, where the Maple Leafs were finally able to win the first playoff series of his career.

Over seven NHL seasons, all in Toronto, Matthews has recorded a total of 542 points in 481 games, while winning the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player in 2021-22.
