A former NHL player doesn’t hold back when going off on the Maple Leafs’ struggles.
Matthew Barnaby came out swinging this week, and the target was none other than Toronto superstar Auston Matthews. The former NHL tough guy didn’t mince words, questioning Matthews’ ability to lead the Maple Leafs to a Stanley Cup.
“Auston Matthews right now isn’t even a point per game player. Looking at a guy like Connor McDavid, he’s got 90 points. I remember that narrative years ago where Auston Matthews is like Connor McDavid. Listen, it’s not even close, it never was close, and they aren’t winning a Stanley Cup with Auston Matthews as their captain.”
Barnaby argued that Toronto’s leadership core gives the impression of being lazy, and worse, being comfortable with it. At this point, he feels like they need to take responsibility, pointing fingers at both management and the players.
For Leafs fans, the comments sting, but perhaps before it rings true. Matthews is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league, but Barnaby’s criticism highlights the growing frustration over Toronto’s inability to translate talent into playoff success.
Whether you agree or not, the message is clear: in Barnaby’s eyes, the Maple Leafs need a wake-up call. And right now, it starts at the top with Matthews and the rest of the leadership core.
