Auston Matthews out of Sunday night's game.

Matthews has been sidelined.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without their star forward this evening.

According to Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, forward Auston Matthews is being held out of tonight's game with what sounds like an injury. Keefe has listed Matthews as day to day and it would appear that the Maple Leafs believe this to be a relatively minor ailment, but it is unfortunate when you consider the timing and Matthews' current pursuit of individual milestones.

Matthews currently sits at 58 goals this season and with several games remaining on the Leafs schedule it seemed like there was a very strong shot he would crack the 60 goal plateau this season. Now that milestone may be in doubt given that we have no way of judging how long this might keep Matthews on the sidelines for. Not to mention that with every goal he scores Matthews will extend the Maple Leafs franchise record, a record he won't have the chance to add to if he isn't playing.

It is at this time entirely unclear how Matthews has come to be injured, he seemed fine during Toronto's overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. Matthews was on the ice for 23 minutes and 49 seconds of that game, picked up an assist despite not adding to his goal total, and finished the night with a plus minus rating of +3.
