Auston Matthews slammed over comments after Game 7 loss.
Auston Matthews made some comments that aren't sitting well with fans in Toronto.
There will no doubt be fallout for months to come after the Toronto Maple Leafs embarrassed themselves on home ice in Game 7 of their second round Stanley cup playoffs against the Florida Panthers, putting up a shameful effort in a 6-1 loss on home ice. In fact, if not for a disallowed goal by Panthers defenseman Seth Jones that definitely should have counted, it would have stood as the single largest Game 7 loss on home ice in the history of the National Hockey League.
After the game reporters were quick to look for answers from the players but it was comments from Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews that stood out above all the rest.... and unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Matthews, who was all but invisible in Game 7, called out his team for simply having too many passengers.
"I just thought we had too many passengers throughout the rest of the game," said Matthews referencing the 2nd and 3rd periods of Game 7. "We just weren't on the same page."
Those comments were echoed by teammate Mitch Marner who agreed with the statement when he was told that Matthews had made those comments to the media.
This seems like a good time to talk about some numbers. Numbers like the fact that over the course of 6 Game 7s for the Maple Leafs, all of which Matthews and Marner were both a part of, the two men have combined for a total of 0 goals. Sportsnet Stats had a rather ugly looking breakdown of the Game 7 performances we have seen from Toronto's highest paid players which you can see just below:
Needless to say the comments were not well received with several harsh responses being fired off quickly after the comments began to circulate on social media. Here are just a few examples:
If you watched Game 7 on Sunday night you probably noticed that players like Simon Benoit, Steve Lorentz and Scott Laughton were being mentioned quite frequently, as the bottom six from the Maple Leafs were showing more heart that the 'core four' by a considerable margin. In fact both Benoit, a defenseman, and Lorentz, who played just 12 minutes in Game 7, finished with the same number of shots as the aforementioned Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
The loss was a terrible look for the Maple Leafs and especially for their top stars, but the tone deaf comments made after the loss may be even worse.
