Auston Matthews’ surprising role in Maple Leafs’ monster Marchenko trade revealed

The Maple Leafs captain was reportedly much closer to the blockbuster than anyone realized.

The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off one of the most significant trades when they landed Kirill Marchenko from the Columbus Blue Jackets just hours before Monday's roster deadline. But perhaps the most telling detail about the blockbuster wasn't the return package or the hefty contract extension. It was the role Auston Matthews played behind the scenes.

According to insider David Pagnotta, Matthews was fully on board with the deal. He reportedly knew in advance that acquiring Marchenko was a real possibility and gave his blessing before it was finalized.

With Matthew Knies involved in to return package to Columbus, a close friend of Matthews, you have to admit it’s a bold very hockey move for the Leafs’ captain to do.

I have to admit that the level of involvement from Toronto's franchise center speaks volumes about the relationship between Matthews and general manager John Chayka, who has reshaped the roster aggressively since taking the reins. Keeping your $13.25 million star in the loop on a move this significant is not just a courtesy. It is a strategic decision.

The trade sent Knies, depth defenseman Emil Andrae, recently waived Steven Lorentz, and a 2027 second-round pick to Columbus in exchange for Marchenko, goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, and forward Miles Wood.

Marchenko, who has been Columbus's leading goal scorer for three consecutive seasons, agreed to a six-year, $75 million extension with the Leafs carrying a $12.5 million cap hit. That slots him just below Matthews on the team's salary structure.

For Matthews, the arrival of Marchenko means an elite shooting talent slotting onto his wing. The fact that he was consulted before the deal went through also underscores a broader dynamic. Chayka appears intent on ensuring his cornerstone player feels invested in the direction of the franchise. That kind of transparency can go a long way when a team is trying to shift from rebuilding mode to legitimate contender, which is exactly what the Leafs are attempting after finishing fifth worst in the league last spring.

The Maple Leafs can now count on a revamped lineup built around speed, creativity, and offensive firepower as the season unfolds. And with Matthews fully bought in, the front office clearly believes this group has what it takes to compete right away.
