Auston Matthews takes his place at the top of the list.
The Maple Leafs have a new goal scoring king.
Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews entered Saturday's game against the New York Islanders just one goal shy of the Maple Leafs all-time goal scoring record, needing just a single goal to reach 420 goals as a Maple Leaf and to tie the record previously held by Maple Leafs legend Mats Sundin.
There was all the pressure in the world on Matthews as he entered the game but Matthews not only answered the challenge but surpassed it. Matthews would open the scoring for the Maple Leafs with his 420th career goal, a beautiful goal that came off the back of a great effort from Matthews to finish the play.
Matthews wouldn't wait very long to claim the record for himself however, scoring the Maple Leafs second goal of the game on a one-timer blast from the top of the face-off circle.
Matthews now stands alone as the all-time leading goal scorer in Maple Leafs franchise history, an accomplishment that likely won't be surpassed for a very long time. Matthew of course has lots of runway ahead of him to add to his current total and could potentially push that number to a level that it may become extremely difficult to ever surpass.
