This just in, the Colorado Avalanche have confirmed that superstar defenseman Cale Makar is OUT for Game 2 of the Western Conference Final.
Makar, of course, missed Game 1 against the Vegas Golden Knights, a game that saw the Avs lose 4-2 and go down 1-0 in the series. A loss in Game 2 this evening will really push the Avs' back up against a wall. Obviously, losing Makar is a major blow for a team that cannot afford any missteps from here on out.
Makar has become the engine that drives the Avalanche, which is why his current undisclosed injury could dramatically shift the Western Conference Final. Makar missed Game 1 after suffering the injury during Colorado’s second-round series against Minnesota, and the Avalanche immediately looked vulnerable in a 4-2 loss to Vegas. Colorado struggled to move the puck cleanly, generate offense from the blue line, and contain Vegas’ transition attack without their star defenseman on the ice.
Makar’s absence goes far beyond statistics. The two-time Norris Trophy winner logs nearly 25 minutes per game, quarterbacks the power play, and acts as Colorado’s most reliable puck transporter under pressure. His skating and vision allow Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche forwards to attack with speed, while defensively he neutralizes opposing top lines. Without him, Colorado’s defense pairing depth becomes exposed and the team loses its calm presence in key moments.
The Avalanche remain dangerous offensively, but against a deep and structured Vegas roster, losing Makar could easily become the defining factor of the series if he misses extended time.
