Colorado opens the Western Conference Final against the Golden Knights tonight.
The Colorado Avalanche have been dealt a potentially devastating blow ahead of Game 1 of the Western Conference Final.
Superstar defenseman Cale Makar will not play tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights, creating immediate concern for Colorado as the series gets underway.
Makar had already been dealing with visible discomfort during the Avalanche’s previous playoff series against the Minnesota Wild. In Game 5, the elite blue liner appeared to suffer an upper-body injury after taking a reverse hit from Mats Zuccarello before leaving for the dressing room late in the third period.
At the time, Colorado attempted to downplay the severity of the situation, but the concern surrounding Makar never fully disappeared.
Now, with the Avalanche officially confirming his absence for Game 1, panic is beginning to grow among fans ahead of what many viewed as the toughest series of Colorado’s postseason run.
The timing could hardly be worse.
Vegas enters the conference final riding momentum after eliminating Anaheim in six games, while Colorado had looked nearly unstoppable through the opening rounds with an 8-1 playoff record.
Makar remains one of the most important players in the entire NHL and arguably the backbone of Colorado’s transition game, power play, and defensive structure. Losing him, even temporarily, drastically changes the complexion of the series.
At this point, the Avalanche have not clarified whether Makar’s absence is expected to be short-term or something more serious.
