The Colorado Avalanche have just shared a terrible update on their head coach.

On Saturday night, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was struck by a puck when a failed attempt at dumping the puck from Vegas Golden Knights forward Keegan Kolesar went astray and ended up going over the boards and into the Avalanche bench. That puck would strike Bednar directly in the face, although the video replay made it difficult to judge how forcefully Bednar had been struck.

Here is a look at the video:

Well as it turns out there was still quite a bit of momentum behind that puck, enough momentum to damage the bones in Bednar's face in fact. On Sunday, the Avalanche revealed that Bednar would not be traveling with the team as he recovers from both facial fractures as well as a corneal abrasion he suffered during this incident.

From the Avalanche:

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar will not accompany the team on their upcoming two-game road trip due to facial fractures and a corneal abrasion. He will not require surgery at this time and is expected to make a full recovery.

Avalanche assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Dave Hakstol will coach the team in Edmonton and Calgary.

A tough break for Bednar to be sure and you have to hope that he will be able to recover in time to return for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Here's to hoping for his full and speedy recovery from this unfortunate accident.
