This is the last thing you want to hear about a player when you've just signed him to a huge new contract, but it sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs are genuinely concerned about what may be next for Maple Leafs' star forward Mitch Marner.

Marner was injured in somewhat of a freak accident on Saturday night when, during the opening faceoff for the second period at center ice, he accidentally stepped on a Philadelphia Flyers' stick after the puck dropped. That unfortunate mistake may end up costing Marner big time as his leg twisted awkwardly when he lost his balance and to make matters worse it also caused his entire body weight to come down awkwardly down on top of that leg as he fell to the ice. Initially based on the way his leg had appeared to twist after stepping on the stick, as well as how he seemed to fall on top of it, I strongly suspected this would turn out to be a significant knee injury, however the Leafs have since revealed that the issue is with his kne and not the ankle.

We may still have to a few days to get an official medical update on the status of the injured Leafs forward but following Saturday's game members of the Toronto Maple Leafs were already addressing the media and expressing their concerns over the status of their fallen comrade. Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott admitted openly that he was worried about Marner, but did try to find a silver lining in the unfortunate incident from Saturday night.

"It obviously hurts & you're worried about it. But I think it was pretty cool to see how many guys were leaning over trying to help him. That's a little positive you can take from that, see how close-knit we are ..."

Perhaps the biggest red flag however came from Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock. The veteran bench boss of the Leafs initially stated that he did not know the extent of the Marner injury, however when pressed on the issue he appeared to admit that this could be a longer term type of injury.

"It's hockey, injuries happen & you find out more about other guys. I don't know the extent of this. I don't know if it's a few days or weeks or whatever. There's no sense on dwelling on it. Someone else gets an opportunity. Let's go."
