The Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock spoke to Yahoo Sports' Puck Daddy blog following yesterday's overtime loss to the New York Rangers. Babcock has made no secret about his distaste for the officials this season and he continued to slam them during
“First, I don’t understand that.”What Babcock is refering to there is the brutal non call on Carl Hagelin's high stick that sliced open the face of Wings Danny Dekeyser. The reason Babcock is so upset? The play happened directly in front of referee Steve Kozari, how he missed the call that couldn't possibly have been outside of his field of vision is unknown to Babcock, or to any Wings supporter for that matter.
“We should have been on a 4-minute power play in the third period. That was obvious. But what do you do?” said Babcock to Puck Daddy. It didn't end there for Babcock however, Babcock was furious with a call two nights ago when they faced the Sabres, a call against Johan Franzen that took away an overtime goal from The Wings.
“The other night, we scored in overtime. Where did we score in overtime when Mule was in the crease?”Babcock waseven more incensed tonight following a very similar scenario with Rick Nash on the overtime winning goal, the difference is this time the goal was allowed.
"Disallowed goal, right? Because of establishing in the crease? Well, anyone got a replay on those great phones you got on that goal tonight?”Puck Daddy, a neutral observer, also noted that referees Tim Peel and Steve Kozari made a slew of pretty questionable calls last night:
But hooboy, was it a bumpy ride for Peel and Kozari. They missed an obvious dive on Gustavsson, calling an goalie interference penalty on Dominic Moore (who did make contact). They missed the Hagelin high-stick. They missed a Dan Cleary goal, that had to be later confirmed by the war room. They made a complete hash out of a late third-period sequence in which Marty St. Louis hooked Justin Abdelkader and Abdelkader embellished – the penalties had Abdelkader off for hooking and Marc Staal of the Rangers off for diving, after he fell over a sliding Abdelkader. St. Louis had to inform the officials they had the wrong player, and he was still hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that was meant for the Red Wing. One thing is for certain, the Wings have been getting a raw deal all year, and Mike Babcock is speaking with the full support of his fan base behind him.
