Or is it just Senators’ Pierre Dorion giving him a bad rep?
Earlier this week, the Detroit Red Wings have acquired two-time 40 goal scoring forward Alex DeBrincat, bringing a native son home, sending Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, and a conditional first round pick and a fourth round pick in 2024 to the Ottawa Senators.
GM Pierre Dorion sounded off on the trade, explaining how he maximized the return on DeBrincat, who had made it clear he was never planning on staying in Ottawa long-term. While Dorion got the feeling that the star player wanted out, he still seemed bitter about how DeBrincat acted throughout the process when speaking about it on TSN 1200.
“Alex’s body language in the exit interview told me enough. Being around a long time, I told [head coach D.J. Smith] ‘he doesn’t want to be here’. When I got back from the World Championships his agent called me and said ‘we’re not going to sign long-term with you guys.”
The Red Wings acquired DeBrincat and signed him to a four-year, $31.5 million contract. Detroit feels confident with adding to player like DeBrincat to his roster. He is consistent and dangerous, and according to Dorion, he also knows what he wants and gets what he wants.
While Dorion shared his experience, some fans in Ottawa might not like what they heard about DeBrincat. But the bottom line is : the star forward is coming home and got the deal he wanted.
