Bad news for the Maple Leafs and last season's big trade acquisition.
The Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed some bad news on Monday morning when they made a move that will keep veteran defenseman Brandon Carlo out of the lineup, at least in the short term.
According to an official announcement from the Maple Leafs department of public relations, Carlo is headed to injured reserve which means the Leafs expect Carlo to be out of the lineup for at least 7 days. The silver lining here is that the Maple Leafs have made the injured reserve designation retroactive to November 13th, which means that Carlo will be eligible to return in relatively short order although there is no guarantee that he will be healthy enough to play by then.
Carlo has come under the microscope this season for his play on the blue line with many concerned that the 28 year old has lost a step when compared to his play last season with the Leafs, and prior to that with the Boston Bruins. That narrative has been fueled by the stellar play of Bruins forward Fraser Minten, one of the assets the Maple Leafs gave up in the trade to acquire Carlo, who has 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points and a plus minus rating of +2 this season in 20 games with the Bruins.
Carlo being out for any length of time is only going to amplify those concerns, and as a result I do not except that today's news will be met very positively.
Carlo has thus far played in 18 games for the Leafs this season and he has 2 points, both assists, and a plus minus rating of +2 so far.
