Bad news for Mike Green results in a huge call up for the Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings announced a bit of bad news on Sunday morning, but thankfully that bad news has also coincided with some good news that has the Red Wings fan base very excited.

We will start with the bad. According to an official announcement from the Detroit Red Wings website, the team has moved to place veteran defenseman Mike Green on injured reserve. Green was hurt back in the 19th of this month and although normally injured reserve would normally rule out a player for at least 7 days, Green was placed on injured reserve retroactive to that date of the 19th. This means that in theory Green could be back on the main roster as early as this week, however there has been no indication from the Red Wings in regards to when he may return at this time. Losing Green is of course a significant blow to the Red Wings blue line as the 34 year old veteran had appeared in 19 games for the Wings this season in which he recorded 1 goal and 3 assists for a total of 4 points on the season. Green currently boasts a plus minus rating of -10 on the season and has also accumulated 16 minutes worth of penalties thus far.

As I stated there was some very good news on Sunday as well however. The Red Wings announced via their official website that there would be a corresponding move to placing Green on injured reserve, and that move was to bring in former first round pick Filip Zadina via a call up from the American Hockey League. Zadina, arguably Detroit's most exiciting prospect, has spent the entire season in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins thus far. In 19 appearances for the Griffins Zadina has recorded 7 goals and 6 assists for a total of 13 points and currently boasts a plus minus rating of -7.

Zadina got his first taste of NHL experience last season when he appeared in 9 games for the Red Wings but did not consistently showcase the dynamic offensive skills that had many believing he would be among the Top 2 picks at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. This will be Zadina's second real shot ay proving himself to be NHL ready and no doubt fans are hoping that he will live up to the challenge and the expectations before him this time around.
