Barry Trotz has interviewed with 4 NHL teams.
We know the identity of at least 4 candidates.
We are hearing some conflicting reports on the subject of free agent head coach Barry Trotz, potentially the hottest free agent in the National Hockey League at the moment.
The latest comes to us courtesy of NHL insider Elliotte Friedman who recently revealed the identity of a number of teams that have already spoken to Trotz regarding his availability, as well as the name of one additional team that Friedman believes Trotz will meet with at some point in the very near future.
"I think there are a number of teams who are waiting for Barry Trotz to make a decision on what his future will be," said Friedman during the NHL broadcast on Saturday night. "And from what I understand, I think Barry Trotz has let it be known to teams that he is not in a hurry to make his choice and he won't make his decision until he's sure it's right for himself and his family."
"He's spoken to Winnipeg, he's spoken to Philly, he's spoken to Vegas, I believe he's spoken to Detroit and I also believe he's still going to speak to Dallas," said Friedman identifying the teams in the mix.
The report from Friedman is an interesting one if only because it appears to come in direct conflict with what was reported earlier in the day by ESPN's Emily Kaplan. According to Kaplan, Trotz may have already made a decision in the form of the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
"A few people in the league have suggested to me that there could be a deal in place already with Barry Trotz and VGK," said Kaplan as per Sin Bin Vegas. "Just knowing the way Vegas does business but we'll have to wait to see where Barry Trotz lands before the rest of the chips fall."
Friedman though was adamant that Trotz was not in a hurry to make a choice.
"Jets fans are always asking, 'Are the Jets serious? Are the Jets serious?,'" joked Friedman. "Yes, I do believe the Jets are very serious and very competitive but like I said Trotz has indicated he will take his time to make sure it's the right move for him and his family and he won't rush it."
They can't both be right, so we will have to wait and see how this one shakes out.
