Benches clear on both sides after the final buzzer.
The Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers both made the decision to wear their centennial jerseys on Sunday night, but I doubt very much that either side of the equation realized that they would be creating some truly old time hockey on the ice.
It was the Red Wings who claimed a 2-1 victory over the Rangers on Sunday night but no one will be talking about the score in this one after what happened after the final buzzer had sounded. Red Wings forward Mason Appleton was the man who ignited the fireworks after his team had already secured the victory over the Rangers, firing the puck into the empty Rangers net and infuriating Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick in the process.
Words were exchanged but things quickly devolved well beyond that point with the benches from both sides coming out onto the ice, sparking a bench clearing brawl. As both Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond would point out on the Red Wings broadcast, this is something that used to be much more common in a bygone era of the National Hockey League, making the Centennial jerseys seem very appropriate in the moment.
There were a number of punches thrown and the officials did initially struggle to maintain order, but most of the players on the ice wanted to be part of a genuine physical altercation and simply paired up with an opposing player to watch the fireworks go off.
It will be very interesting to see if any supplemental discipline for either of the teams involved in the brawl stems from this altercation.
Here is a look at the replay of the incident:
