Bettman hints at bringing back highly controversial change to the NHL.

Monday night was a particularly noteworthy night in the history of the National Hockey League, but it was a huge moment in the career of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Bettman was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame on that night, and during his induction speech he touched on a very interesting change that may be coming back to the NHL.

More than 20 years ago the NHL debuted a highly-controversial change casually know as the glowing puck. The puck which would appear on the NHL's national broadcasts on the Fox network was largely derided by fans and as a result was eventually done away with when the NHL ended their partnership with Fox, however is sounds like it may be coming back.

"While it was the subject of much discussion, and some derision, in 1996, the technology of Fox Sports' glowing puck was the precursor of the first-down line that has become standard practice for any football broadcast, and any number of innovations," said Bettman as per ESPN. "Actually, we are working on a dramatically updated version of that technology, and we have plans to roll out updated player and puck tracking. We are literally going back to the future."

It has to be said that the technology available to day would dramatically alter what the glowing puck would look like compared to over 20 years ago, however it remains to be seen how modern day NHL fans would react to a change that many felt was a bit of a gimmick in the first place.

Do you believe the NHL, using new technologies, could implement a puck tracking system that would approve of? Let us know in the comments below.
