Contenders and sellers alike could reshape the league before the clock hits 3 PM ET. See who’s in play below:
The National Hockey League trade deadline is finally here, and after a relatively quiet start to the week, the market has heated up. With hours to go before the 3 PM ET cutoff, several big names remain in play, and the league could be in for a chaotic day of moves.
A shocker took place in the middle of the night when the Washington Capitals traded beloved defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks.
A handful of teams have yet to make the kind of splash that could reshape the playoff picture. The Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, and Buffalo Sabres are all sitting in the thick of the Atlantic Division race but have not yet made a major move. Meanwhile, clubs like the Seattle Kraken, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, and Dallas Stars could emerge as the wild cards of deadline day, either swinging big trades or staying surprisingly quiet.
One of the most intriguing storylines centers on Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues. Earlier this week, talks between St. Louis and Buffalo reportedly intensified around the 26-year-old center. At one point, it appeared a blockbuster might be imminent, with Sabres GM Jarmo Kekäläinen believed to have offered a massive package that included Owen Power, Konsta Helenius, and Jack Quinn. In the end, Buffalo backed away from the steep price, leaving Thomas, at least for now, in St. Louis.
Elsewhere, trade chatter continues to swirl. The Calgary Flames could move veterans Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri, while the New York Rangers held out Vincent Trocheck from Thursday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs for trade-related reasons. They later traded Sam Carrick to the Sabres on Thursday night.
The Philadelphia Flyers are also believed to be exploring the market for defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen as their playoff hopes fade, while the New Jersey Devils could go ahead move Dougie Hamilton or Simon Nemec.
Goaltending could also be a storyline. Both Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers and Jordan Binnington of the Blues have surfaced in rumors, though it remains unclear whether a trade partner truly exists.
Interestingly, the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers appear willing to sell this time around, with players like A. J. Greer and Tomas Nosek also believed to be available.
The Maple Leafs could also be a team to watch. After moving Nicolas Roy, Toronto might look to cash in on a strong return for forward Bobby McMann, though it remains unclear if another team is willing to meet the asking price. The Leafs could also explore moving veteran Scott Laughton and defenseman Brandon Carlo, who was acquired at last year’s deadline.
In Nashville, former Conn Smythe Trophy winner Ryan O’Reilly would reportedly prefer to stay put, much like teammate Steven Stamkos, but the Nashville Predators appear to be holding a significant sale, which could ultimately force tough decisions.
Elsewhere, the Winnipeg Jets held out defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn for roster management reasons Thursday night, and finally moved them out to Buffalo in a multi-piece transaction in the middle of the night.
And in Vancouver, trade chatter has intensified around nearly the entire roster. After already moving Tyler Myers to the Dallas Stars, the Vancouver Canucks could still deal major pieces, with names like Evander Kane and Elias Pettersson circulating in trade speculation, while Conor Garland was moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier.
And as always on deadline day, the biggest move could come from the team nobody sees coming. With contenders and sellers still weighing their options, the final hours before the deadline could deliver the blockbuster that reshapes the playoff race overnight.
