It has been roughly three weeks since veteran Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray made a sudden and unexpected departure from a Leafs' morning skate, and that in theory would put him one week away from a possible return to action.

At the time Murray suffered the injury the Leafs ruled him out for a period of four weeks, but a recent update from head coach Sheldon Keefe may indicate that things are going better than had originally been expected.

On Sunday, less than 24 hours after Leafs' goaltender Ilya Samsonov was forced to leave a game against the Bruins due to injury, Sheldon Keefe informed members of the media that Murray's recovery was progressing ahead of schedule.

"Physically he's feeling very good & is probably ahead of schedule in that sense," said Keefe of Murray's injury.

The news couldn't possibly come at a better time for a Maple Leafs team that has already suffered a number of injuries at the goaltending position this season. Those injuries forced the Leafs to sign a new goaltender on Sunday, but a return for Murray would in theory allow them to work with a tandem of Murray and backup goaltender Erik Kallgren, depending on the severity of Samsonov's injury of course.

The return of Murray also means that the Leafs will have to make room for his contract, although that will be a problem for Kyle Dubas and his team to manage.
