Bill Guerin comments on “No BS” discussions with Cam Talbot following today's trade

The Wild GM is a straight shooter if nothing else.

Earlier today the Minnesota Wild traded goaltender Cam Talbot to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.

Check it out:

There had been rumors that Talbot was not happy when the Wild acquired goaltender Marc Andre Fleury at the trade deadline and was in fact disappointed to have lost his starter's role with the team despite performing well during the regular season. After Fleury signed a two year extension with the Wild last week there were reports that Talbot had formally requested a trade to get a better opportunity elsewhere. And now with Matt Murray out of the picture in Ottawa, Talbot should get a clean slate and a full opportunity to become the Senator's uncontested starter.

Wild GM Bill Guerin was hopeful that things would work out with both Talbot and Fleury in Minnesota this upcoming season, but after a heart to heart conversation it was clear that that was never going to be the case.

You can't say that Guerin isn't a straight shooter and, as evidenced by his own comments, Talbot appears to be cut from the same cloth. Both guys aren't going to sugar coat things and I think it's very commendable that Guerin moved Talbot to a new opportunity in short order. No sense letting things fester and adding unneeded drama to your locker room.

As for Talbot, he's happy for a fresh start.

“I’m excited about the move," he said to TSN insider Pierre LeBrun. "They already had a good young core and they made some good moves at the draft and have the space to still make a splash the next couple days. Looking forward to joining the group and helping to lead them back to the playoffs.”

"Cam is experienced and provides us with greater goaltending stability heading into next season," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion in a prepared statement. "He was instrumental in helping Minnesota reach the playoffs in each of his two seasons with the Wild. The tandem of he and Anton Forsberg sets us up nicely for the upcoming year."

Talbot is signed for one more season at a $3.6 million cap hit and put up a stellar 2.76 GAA and .911 save percentage in 49 games with the Wild last season. As for Gustavsson, he's signed for just $787,000 this upcoming season and put up a sub-par 3.55 GAA and .892 save percentage in 18 games for the Sens last season.
