Bill Guerin signs a new contract to stay on as Wild GM

Bill Guerin’s tenure as general manager of the Minnesota Wild has reached another significant milestone, with the longtime executive signing a multi-year contract extension with the organization today. The new deal keeps Guerin in charge as Minnesota continues to build what has increasingly become one of the more intriguing teams in the Western Conference.

Guerin originally took over as the Wild’s general manager on August 21, 2019, replacing Paul Fenton. The former NHL forward arrived in Minnesota with considerable front-office experience after spending time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, including serving as assistant general manager and later general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Since taking over in Minnesota, Guerin has overseen a significant transition. The Wild moved away from the aging core that had defined much of the franchise's previous era while eventually building around stars such as Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy.

One of Guerin's biggest accomplishments came last September, when he secured Kaprizov on an eight-year, $136 million contract extension. That deal, which carries a $17 million annual average value, keeps the Russian superstar in Minnesota through the 2033-34 season.

Guerin has also become increasingly aggressive in his attempts to push the Wild toward legitimate contention. His biggest move of the 2025-26 season came in December, when Minnesota acquired Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks. Hughes immediately became a major piece of the Wild's lineup, recording 53 points in just 48 regular-season games after arriving in Minnesota.

That trade helped set the stage for what became Guerin's strongest season yet as an NHL general manager. Minnesota finished the 2025-26 regular season with 104 points and finally broke through in the postseason, defeating the Dallas Stars in the first round for the franchise's first playoff series victory in 11 years. The Wild eventually fell to the Colorado Avalanche in the second round.

The results were enough for Guerin to receive the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award for the 2025-26 season, the first time he had won the award and the first time in franchise history that a Wild general manager received the honour. He received 37 of 40 ballots and 131 total points.

The timing of Guerin's extension is particularly notable because Minnesota is entering a potentially pivotal period. The Wild recently extended head coach John Hynes on a multi-year contract after his first-round breakthrough, while Guerin continues to work on a long-term contract for Hughes.

For Guerin, the new contract represents another chapter in what has already become a lengthy tenure in Minnesota. Six years after taking over a franchise in need of a reset, he now has the responsibility of taking the Wild from playoff breakthrough to sustained Stanley Cup contention.

With Kaprizov locked up, Hughes at the centre of the organization's defensive plans and Hynes back behind the bench, Guerin will have plenty of important decisions ahead. His extension ensures that, for the foreseeable future, he will be the person making those decisions.
