Former National Hockey League head coach was fired this season while he was behind the bench of the Calgary Flames as their head coach after some very ugly stories about him came to light. Peters was accused of both physical and verbal abuse towards his players during his time as the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, some of which at least included derogatory comments directed at minority players that can only be described as hateful.

Normally when an NHL head coach is fired the first question to be asked is where he could end up coaching next in the coming seasons, however in the case of Peters here it felt like absolutely no one was asking that question. The fact is that after the public relations nightmare that Peters went through it seems extremely unlikely that there would be an NHL team out there willing to take the risk of hiring him given all the backlash that would inevitably come with. There are however teams outside of North America that are very willing to entertain the idea of hiring Peters and it sounds like we might see that happening sooner rather than later.

According to a report from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, Peters is now getting looks from teams in the Kontinental Hockey League, a league that many former NHL executives and coaches have turned to in recent years. According to Matheson KHL team Yekaterinburg has been weighing the possibility of bringing in Peters as a head coach, seemingly either unaware of the issues he encountered here in North America or simply feeling that Peters deserves a second chance given his abilities behind the bench. This has not just come out of the blue either, and in fact according to Matheson Peters had help from a former NHL superstar.

Matheson reports that none other than beloved former NHL forward Pavel Datsyuk is the man behind this most recent rumor, having reportedly put a good word in for Peters with Yekaterinburg. Datsyuk of course played under Peters when the head coach was an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings, and Datsyuk also plays for Yekaterinburg. Clearly the magic man believes that this could be a match.
