Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews sounds off on empty seats at United Center
Chicago's sellout streak came to a crashing halt this season.
Things haven't gone even remotely according to plan for the Chicago Blackhawks this season. Prior to their victory over the Ottawa Senators, they'd dropped their first nine games of the 2021-22 campaign, and also saw their 535 game sellout streak at the United Center come to and end.
Oh, and of course, there's the massive distraction of the sexual abuse coverup scandal that continues to rock the NHL and the Blackhawks organization.
Meanwhile, the players have certainly noticed the lack of bodies in the seats in the venue that was once the hottest ticket in town.
"It's definitely different," captain Jonathan Toews opined. "I know I wasn't around last year and guys played in empty buildings last year, and it was enough to make you look around and wonder what was going on."
However, he tried to look on the bright side.
"Obviously the losing streak and a lot of different variables right now. It is what it is. I think as a team, we're confident we'll get on the horse and start building and winning games, and hopefully start filling the seats again."
Meanwhile, head coach Jeremy Colliton stated the obvious - if his team plays better, then more people will come to watch them play in the Windy City. However, he did thank the fans who have bought tickets despite their miserable start to the season.
"It's up to us to play well, that's what we can control," Colliton said. "We do appreciate the people who come and show support. I think the atmosphere last game was pretty good, it was an exciting game."
The Blackhawks will be taking on the undefeated Carolina Hurricanes tonight in Chicago.
