Unreal.
The Chicago Blackhawks are continuing to clean house.
The Blackhawks are fully committing to rebuilding their franchise from the ground up and that began at the draft when general manager Kyle Davidson dealt away forwards Alex DeBrincat and Kirby Dach in a pair of highly scrutinized trade deals. That continued over the weekend when Chicago Blackhawks insider Mark Lazerus announced that Dominik Kubalik would not receive a qualifying offer from the Blackhawks, with the team effectively letting him walk away for nothing. That announcement was quickly followed by Lazerus also announcing that Dylan Strome, a former 3rd overall pick in the draft, would also be allowed to walk away as a free agent without a qualifying offer from the Blackhawks.
In something of an unbelievable update though, it turns out the Blackhawks were not done just yet.
On Monday, National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston announced that both Brett Connolly and Henrik Borgstrom had been placed on unconditional waivers, with the Blackhawks having the intention of buying both of them out of their current contracts. This means that the Blackhawks are cutting another 2 players off of their current roster, which begs the question who will be playing for them come next season?
To be fair to the Blackhawks here it's not like Connolly, who is a former 1st round pick (6th overall) in his own right, was a major contributor for them last season, with the team burying his contract in the American Hockey League for the majority of the season. Connolly only appeared in 9 NHL games for the Blackhawks last season and had only a single point, an assist.
The same can't be said of Henrik Borgstromn who did play a significant role for the Blackhawks last season with 4 goals and 3 assists for a total of 7 points over 52 games played during the regular season.
Both players will become unrestricted free agents off the back of these buyouts, which must go into effect before the buyout window closes on Tuesday, and will be free to sign with any team in the league except for the Blackhawks of course.
