The Blackhawks now know how long they'll be without their franchise superstar after offseason shoulder surgery.
The Chicago Blackhawks have been building their future around Connor Bedard since the day they drafted him first overall. But the young franchise cornerstone just hit another significant health setback.
Bedard underwent surgery on his left shoulder after suffering an injury while training in Vancouver. The procedure was reportedly successful, and the 19-year-old is expected to be sidelined for approximately four months, targeting a return in November.
Bedard's timeline, assuming rehabilitation goes smoothly, would put him back in the lineup in November. Let's not forget the NHL is expanding to an 84-game regular season schedule, which could soften the blow slightly by giving Bedard more opportunities to contribute once he returns.
The shoulder concern is not entirely new territory for Bedard. During the 2025-26 season, he suffered a right shoulder injury in the closing seconds of a game against the St. Louis Blues while taking a faceoff. That setback cost him 12 games and reportedly affected his play even after he returned to the lineup.
This latest injury involves the opposite shoulder, his left, and came during an offseason workout when he reportedly fell awkwardly. The fact that it required surgery rather than just rehabilitation marks a more serious intervention than what was needed for his right shoulder last season.
Bedard's injury history also includes a fractured jaw suffered in January 2024, though he returned ahead of schedule from that setback and went on to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie with 61 points in 68 games.
The Blackhawks now have to focus on ensuring Bedard's rehab stays on track. If all goes well, he should have the bulk of the regular season ahead of him when he returns, and Chicago's long-term plans remain very much centered on their young star.
