The Blake Wheeler era with the Winnipeg Jets is officially over, as it was announced today that the team would be buying out the final year of his contract.

As you remember, the Jets season came to an unceremonious close earlier this spring against the Vegas Golden Knights, bowing out in a quick five game series. And immediately after their season ended, the sparring between head coach Rick Bowness and Wheeler was made public, giving fans a foreshadowing of what will likely be a summer of major changes.

This came on the heels of Wheeler having been stripped of the captaincy by Bowness before the start of last season.

Despite being 36 years of age, Wheeler has no intention of hanging up the skates just yet, and feels that he can still contribute to an NHL club. He posted a modest 55 points with the Jets last year, scoring 16 goals with 39 assists.

And according to his agent Matt Keator, Wheeler would prefer to play for an Eastern Conference team owing to the easier travel schedule along with the desire for a new challenge:

Wheeler originally began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins, but would be traded to the then-Atlanta Thrashers in the deal that saw Rich Peverley head back to Boston; he'd help them to the Stanley Cup later that spring.
