The 2026 NHL Draft is only hours away, and the Toronto Maple Leafs appear to have been far deeper into blockbuster trade discussions than many realized. But just as a franchise-altering opportunity seemed to be taking shape, another star player’s decision may have brought everything to a screeching halt.

According to Frank Seravalli, the Maple Leafs had been engaged in discussions with the Dallas Stars regarding a potential trade involving Matthew Knies. The framework reportedly revolved around Dallas acquiring Knies while using the No. 7 overall pick it was expected to receive from the Seattle Kraken as part of the return in what was supposed to be a sign and trade for Jason Robertson.

The Stars were believed to view Knies as a potential long-term replacement for Robertson, making the deal attractive for both organizations.

Toronto’s asking price has never been modest. Sources told Seravalli the Leafs were seeking nothing less than a top-10 selection, along with NHL-ready roster pieces, in exchange for the 23-year-old winger. As Seravalli explained, if Toronto was going to move one of its most valuable young players, the return would have to be a true franchise-altering haul.

But then everything changed.

On Thursday night, reports surfaced that Robertson rejected the massive eight-year contract extension offered by Seattle, effectively preventing the sign and trade that would have sent him to the Kraken. Without Robertson agreeing to the move, Dallas never received Seattle’s No. 7 overall selection, removing the centerpiece that reportedly could have made a Knies blockbuster possible.

Instead of inching closer to acquiring a coveted top-10 pick, the Maple Leafs suddenly find themselves back at square one.

That does not necessarily mean Knies is off the market. If anything, Seravalli’s reporting confirms Toronto has been actively exploring blockbuster scenarios and is willing to listen if another club is prepared to meet its enormous asking price. However, one of the most intriguing pathways appears to have disappeared almost as quickly as it emerged.

With the draft now just hours away, John Chayka still has time to pivot. Whether another team steps forward with a comparable package remains to be seen, but one thing has become abundantly clear: if Matthew Knies is traded, it will only be for a return capable of reshaping the future of the Maple Leafs.
