The NHL Draft was supposed to mark a turning point for the Edmonton Oilers and their long-simmering Darnell Nurse situation. For weeks, the expectation around the league was that a trade would materialize around draft weekend. But as Friday night unfolded, the anticipated blockbuster never came together.

According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, Edmonton has been actively exploring trade options for Nurse, with multiple sources indicating the Anaheim Ducks expressed serious interest in the veteran defenseman. The Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins had also been engaged in discussions, with some believing Pittsburgh sat atop Nurse's preferred destination list.

The complication, as it has been from the start, is Nurse's no-trade clause. The defenseman holds significant control over where he ends up, and his list of approved teams reportedly includes Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Boston.

Anaheim's interest added a wrinkle to the equation. The Ducks were reportedly eager to acquire Nurse, but it remains unclear whether Anaheim was among the destinations Nurse would accept. That mismatch between interested suitors and Nurse's personal preferences has reportedly been the central obstacle throughout the process.

Edmonton GM Stan Bowman has signalled he will not be rushed into a deal. That patience was evident on draft night, as the Oilers chose not to force a move that did not meet their asking price or align with Nurse's trade list.

The Penguins had long been considered the most likely landing spot. GM Kyle Dubas has made it clear he wants to surround Sidney Crosby with experienced talent during the final stretch of the captain's career, and adding a top-four defenseman like Nurse would fit that blueprint. Yet even with Pittsburgh reportedly willing to engage, the two sides could not finalize terms before the draft's opening rounds.

Nurse demanded a trade from Edmonton earlier this offseason, making it clear his time with the organization is over. The question was never if he would be moved, but when and where.

For now, the Oilers head into the weekend still carrying Nurse's hefty contract on their books. With free agency approaching and multiple teams still circling, the trade saga is far from finished. It just was not resolved on the timeline many around the league expected.
