Pending a trade call, the Vegas Golden Knights are acquiring forward Tomas Hertl from the San Jose Sharks in the last minutes of Trade Deadline Day.

Vegas is sending young prospect David Edstrom and a first round pick in 2025. Along with Herlt, the Golden Knights get two third-round picks, one in 2025 and the other in 2025.

It has also been reported that the Sharks will be retaining 17% of Hertl’s salary for the next six years. He signed an 8 year, $65,100,000 contract with the San Sharks in March 2022.

It is more than $8M in actual dollars across the life of the deal for San Jose.

Hertl's teammates are visibly upset with the shocking trade with defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic posting on X a crying emoji following the transaction.

Hertl has recorded 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 48 games so far this season. He’s been sidelined since Feb. 12 after having loose cartilage cleaned out of his knee. Hertl is expected to return before the playoffs.

Selected 17 overall in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Sharks, this trade puts an end to his 11-year tenure in San Jose, where he has collected 484 points in 712 regular season games.

Vegas pulls off yet another splash on the trade market after acquiring defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames and forward Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals.

However, the Golden Knights had to part with their 2025 first round pick and 19-year-old Edstrom, who was Vegas’ first-round pick from last year’s draft. He has six goals and 11 assists in 42 games so far this season for Frolunda HC in the Swedish league.
