A huge trade involving Mitch Marner is getting close at the NHL draft!
We have a blockbuster trade rumor emerging from the 2025 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs are attempting to iron out the final details of a trade that would send pending unrestricted free agent forward Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Additionally, Friedman reports that one piece of this deal would see Golden Knights forward Nicolas Roy moving the other way and going to Toronto.
If you're wondering why the Golden Knights would make this deal with Marner only days away from going on the open market, the answer is actually quite simple. By trading for Marner the Golden Knights secure a window in which they will have the exclusive rights to negotiate a new deal with Marner, and it would seem they believe they can pull that off in the time that remains before free agency.
Additionally, if this were to be a sign-and-trade type of deal, the kind of deal Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving previously made when he sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers when he was general manager of the Calgary Flames, it would allow the Golden Knights to sign Marner to an eighth year. That would not only potentially be enticing for the player, but could also help lower the average annual value and cap hit of Marner's next contract.
