The 2026-27 NHL season has barely gotten underway, but the rumor mill surrounding the Montreal Canadiens is already churning. The organization's search for a legitimate second-line center capable of boosting a playoff push has been a recurring storyline, and one name has emerged at the center of the conversation: New York Rangers veteran Mika Zibanejad.

Analyst Shayne Gaumond of the Sick Podcast publicly floated the idea, stating confidently that Zibanejad will be Montreal's second-line center by the time the playoffs arrive. The bold prediction quickly sparked debate among the Canadiens fanbase.

Zibanejad, now 33, brings a resume that speaks for itself. The Swedish forward has appeared in more than 1,000 NHL games over his career, accumulating 348 goals and 470 assists for 818 total points. Last season he bounced back to strong form, posting 34 goals and 44 assists in 81 games with the Rangers for 78 points.

What makes this scenario especially compelling is the personal connection between Zibanejad and Montreal's front office. Jeff Gorton, the Canadiens' vice president of hockey operations, is the same executive who originally acquired Zibanejad while running the Rangers. Gorton also signed the center to his current eight-year, $68 million contract carrying an $8.5 million annual cap hit. That existing relationship could reportedly smooth the path in any trade discussions.

There is another element working in Montreal's favor. Chris Kreider, who now plays for the Canadiens, is widely known as Zibanejad's closest friend in hockey. The two spent years together in New York, and that bond could prove pivotal in convincing Zibanejad to waive his full no-movement clause, which runs through the end of his deal. A player holding that kind of contractual leverage has the final say in any trade talks, but the chance to reunite with a close friend on a team positioned for a playoff run could reportedly make the idea far more appealing.

According to Gaumond's proposed framework, Montreal would need to part with a young NHL forward, a young professional defenseman, a "B-level" prospect, and a draft pick. In practical terms, that package could look something like Oliver Kapanen, Jayden Struble, Owen Beck, and a first-round selection.

Zibanejad's playoff track record only adds to his appeal. He has collected 63 points in 74 career postseason games, including a dominant 24-point effort in 20 games during the Rangers' 2022 playoff run.

The situation bears close monitoring over the coming months. Should New York continue to struggle in the standings while Montreal positions itself as a legitimate contender, the conditions could align perfectly for a deal near the trade deadline. The Gorton connection and the Kreider friendship give the Canadiens an edge that few rival suitors could match.
