Blue Jackets finally sign star forward Adam Fantilli

It's been one of the lingering storylines of the offseason in Columbus, and it finally has a resolution. After missing the start of training camp and all preseason action while negotiations dragged on, Adam Fantilli and the Blue Jackets have come to terms on a massive new deal that cements the young centre as the franchise's cornerstone for years to come.

A Big Payday for a Big-Time Talent

The Blue Jackets announced on Thursday that Fantilli has signed a six-year contract worth $82.5 million, which works out to an average annual value of $13.75 million against the salary cap. That's a significant commitment for a player who just wrapped up his entry-level deal, but Columbus clearly sees Fantilli as the kind of player you build around.

And honestly, it's hard to argue with that assessment. The 21-year-old from Nobleton, Ontario, posted career highs across the board last season, tallying 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in a full 82-game slate. He anchored the Blue Jackets' top line for the bulk of the year and showed the kind of two-way development that makes front offices feel good about handing out nine-figure contracts.

Columbus president of hockey operations Don Waddell didn't hold back his enthusiasm, praising Fantilli's combination of speed, size, and skill, along with the competitive fire that sets him apart. Waddell called him "one of the most exciting young players in the NHL" and described the signing as a huge day for the organization and its fanbase.

Since entering the league as the third overall pick in 2023, Fantilli has accumulated 67 goals and 140 points across 213 career games. Before going pro, he made waves at the University of Michigan, where he became just the third freshman in history to win the Hobey Baker Award after putting up 30 goals and 65 points in a single college season. He's also represented Canada on the international stage multiple times, including gold medal performances at both the 2023 World Juniors and the World Hockey Championship.

What It Means for Columbus Going Forward

There's no sugarcoating the fact that the Blue Jackets have now missed the playoffs for six consecutive seasons, and Fantilli's minus-13 rating last year, the worst among Columbus forwards, is a reminder that there's still plenty of work to do. But locking up a player of this caliber through the 2031-32 season gives the organization a legitimate star to build around as they try to turn things around.

The holdout, while not ideal, was always expected to end this way. Reports leading up to the deal suggested the number would land north of $13 million per year, and that's exactly where it shook out. With Fantilli now under contract and presumably set to join his teammates, the Blue Jackets can shift their full attention to the season ahead.
