One of the most closely watched coaching stories of the NHL offseason appears to have reached its conclusion. After a joint investigation conducted by the NHL and NHL Players’ Association, former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Mike Babcock has officially been cleared to return to the league. The decision removes the final obstacle preventing the Edmonton Oilers from moving forward with plans to make Babcock their next head coach.

But while the hockey world reacted to the news, one organization chose a different approach.

According to insider Aaron Portzline, the Columbus Blue Jackets declined to comment on the NHL’s decision through a team spokesman.

Silence can often speak louder than words.

Babcock’s brief and controversial tenure in Columbus remains one of the strangest coaching episodes in recent NHL history. Hired by the Blue Jackets in the summer of 2023, he resigned before coaching a single regular-season game after concerns emerged regarding interactions with players, including allegations that he had requested to see personal photos on their phones.

The controversy prompted widespread scrutiny and eventually led to calls for a formal review. With Edmonton expressing interest in hiring Babcock, both the NHL and NHLPA revisited the situation and conducted a fresh investigation. The league ultimately determined there was no basis to restrict Babcock’s future employment, effectively clearing the path for his return behind an NHL bench.

Still, the reaction from Columbus, or lack thereof, quickly became part of the story. The Blue Jackets had an opportunity to publicly weigh in on the decision involving the coach whose tenure ended in such dramatic fashion. Instead, they chose not to comment.

Whether that silence reflects a desire to move on from a difficult chapter or something else entirely is open to interpretation. What is certain is that Babcock is headed back to the NHL, while Columbus appears content to leave the past exactly where it is.

Can’t wait to see when Edmonton and Columbus face off on the ice next season.
