The St. Louis Blues said goodbye to their captain David Backers this summer when they allowed him to leave the organization as a free agent, eventually signing as a Boston Bruin, and now the team is facing a decision on who will next take up that mantle.

From the outside the obvious choice may appear to be a forward Vladimir Tarasenko, the team did after all recently sign him to a massive new contract, and he is also the face of their franchise when it comes to elite level talent. That said there were rumblings of discontent on both sides last season, and that could put a wrench in that theory.

The other candidate we would list as a favorite is defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who not only has an extended tenure ion the organization, but like Tarasenko is currently under contract with St. Louis for the long-term. The organization is undoubtedly very comfortable with Pietrangelo and he wore the "A" while Backes was captain. Much like Tarasenko he is one of the team's most talented players.

A potential third option, and one we would consider more of a long shot would be veteran forward Alex Steen. He's older than the first two players mentioned and therefore brings more experience to the table, however his contract would expire this season which makes the situation less certain in the long term. Steen however has spent the last several season with the Blues and likely will be at least considered during the process.
