Hand picked by the former captain himself.
The Vancouver Canucks and New York Islanders tee'd off the unofficial trade season earlier this week with a blockbuster deal involving Canucks' leading scorer Bo Horvat heading to Long Island.
The Islanders are obviously getting a player in the deal in Horvat, who is on pace for a career season. He's a hardworking, productive, two-way center who is on pace for 50 goals this season. Those guys don't exactly grow on trees, so the Isles were wise to snap him up. More than that though, the Islanders are getting a tremendous leader. Horvat has served as the Canucks captain for the past four seasons and took all the slings and arrows that come with wearing the "C" in a rabid Canadian market.
What I'm left wondering though is... who will be the Canucks' next captain?
Well, Horvat himself has offered up his opinion and he was quoted at this weekend's All-Star festivities that Swedish forward Elias Pettersson would get his vote as team captain.
Check it out:
Interesting...
Honestly, I think Pettersson would be an excellent choice. By all accounts he's a respected player and he certainly sets a good example for his teammates through his play. Like Horvat he's a tireless worker with excellent defensive ability, but Pettersson's offensive game is a lot more well rounded than Horvat's.
All of this is to say that Pettersson would make an excellent captain should the Canucks choose to go that route.
