NHL Player Safety makes absolutely zero sense...
UPDATE: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann has been suspended for one game for high sticking Tampa Bay Lightning forward Oliver Bjorkstrand.
This just in, NHL Player Safety has called a hearing for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann later today for high-sticking Tampa Bay’s Oliver Bjorkstrand last night.
For the record, here's the infraction in question:
Did you see it?
McMann swipes down with his stick after coming together with Bjorkstrand, but doesn't really seem to do any damage? I'm not sure I'm following here...
Then again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised? NHL Player Safety under former enforcer Georges Parros is a complete guessing game.
It's also worth noting that McMann was tossed from this game for this infraction, so whatever penalty he receives a result of his hearing will act as supplemental discipline.
Keep in mind that this is the same game where Gage Goncalves received a match penalty for a brutal knee on knee hit. Goncalves reportedly won't receive any additional penalty for this reckless play.
I'm not saying Goncalves deserves prison time for this hit... but this is clearly a more dangerous play than McMann's right? Or... does the NHL just simply not understand the game anymore?
