Bombshell Connor Hellebuyck report reveals secret agreement with Jets

The Connor Hellebuyck saga in Winnipeg has taken a dramatic turn in recent weeks. What initially appeared to be a straightforward trade request from a disgruntled franchise goaltender may actually be rooted in something far more complicated.

Hellebuyck publicly confirmed last week, through agent Ray Petkau, what had been whispered for months: he wants out of Winnipeg and expects to be traded before training camp opens. But the real intrigue lies in what reportedly happened behind closed doors years ago.

According to NHL insider Jeff Marek, speaking on a recent episode of The Sheet podcast, an informal agreement struck when Hellebuyck signed his seven-year extension in October 2023 could be at the heart of this crisis. The understanding, as Marek described it, was simple. Hellebuyck would commit to staying in Winnipeg, but if the team stopped being competitive, the Jets would facilitate a move to a contender.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who was also on the podcast, went even further. While Marek acknowledged he could not personally confirm the arrangement existed, Pagnotta stated he believes the deal was real.

This kind of agreement, of course, never appears in any official contract. It is a moral commitment, a handshake between two parties built on trust. The kind of promise that carries little weight when things are going well, but becomes explosive when they fall apart.

And things fell apart spectacularly in Winnipeg. After a stunning 2024-25 campaign that produced the Presidents' Trophy and 116 points, the Jets collapsed the following season. They finished 35-35-12 for just 82 points and 26th in the overall standings. The team closed out the year on a four-game losing streak, including a 6-1 embarrassment against San Jose. Hellebuyck himself posted the worst statistical season of his career, with a .895 save percentage across 57 games.

If the reported promise is genuine, the Jets front office finds itself in an incredibly uncomfortable spot.

Hellebuyck's public statement was measured but unmistakable. He recalled the day Winnipeg drafted him in 2012 and expressed gratitude for his years with the organization, while making clear he believes it is time to move on for himself and his family. He reportedly submitted a private trade request months earlier, but the lack of progress forced his hand.

Several signs already pointed toward this outcome. The Jets signed goaltender Stuart Skinner on July 1, and the organization has promising young netminders like Thomas Milic, Domenic DiVincentiis, and Isaac Poulter in its development pipeline. All of it suggested Winnipeg was already planning for life after Hellebuyck, which only deepened the veteran's frustration.

With a cap hit of $8.5 million through 2030-31 and his 33rd birthday behind him, Hellebuyck represents a significant commitment for any trade partner. But his resume, which includes a Hart Trophy, three Vezinas, a Jennings Trophy, and an Olympic gold medal, ensures there will be no shortage of suitors.

General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff faces enormous pressure to find a resolution before training camp begins. Whether the reported 2023 handshake deal is real or not, the outcome appears all but certain. The Hellebuyck era in Winnipeg is ending. Only the destination remains unknown.
