An extremely talented young forward is suddenly up for grabs in what could be one of the biggest trades of the summer.
It would appear as though the Buffalo Sabres are seriously considering moving on from yet another extremely talented young forward, with a bombshell update on Sunday morning indicating that the talk around Sabres forward JJ Peterka does indeed have legs.
That update came courtesy of National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman who was asked if there was anything different in regards to Peterka, specifically as it pertains to a trade, that had developed over the past few days.
"Yes there is," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "I have said on this podcast... that the Sabres have indicated that they do not want to trade JJ Peterka. Their answer has changed, they are at least now listening on it."
Friedman clarified that this has been a recent development with the Sabres moving off of what their original position was.
"I think that is recent," said Friedman.
Friedman was asked if the change of mindset from the Sabres has stemmed from exceptional offers from opposing teams, but unfortunately it seems the Sabres change of heart has been motivated by something far less promising.
"No," answered Friedman dismissing notions of big offers. "I think it's the reality of the situation. People know Peterka is unhappy and it's believed he would like to go somewhere else and I just think that reality is sinking in a bit."
Friedman went a step further and indicated that he believes the Sabres are genuinely looking into the possibility of trading Peterka despite their reservations about such a move.
"I think the Sabres realize they have to at least look into it," said Friedman. "And I think in the last little bit it's gone from 'We don't wanna do it and we're not doing it' to 'We don't wanna do it, but we at least have to look into it.'"
Friedman did not have any bold predictions about where Peterka might land, but a talented 23 year old coming off a 27 goal and 41 assist season, racking up 68 points in just 77 games on the Buffalo Sabres, is bound to draw interest from just about every team around the National Hockey League.
"Now we're in we'll see mode, we'll see what happens here," said Friedman in conclusion.
A trade involving Peterka could very well be one of the biggest trades of the summer, and unfortunately I suspect it is a trade that most fans in Buffalo were hoping their team wouldn't make.
