On Monday, the Boston Bruins wanted to have some fun amid a slow summer. After a busy stretch in which they signed bottom-six forwards and acquired veteran left wing Viktor Arvidsson in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers, they haven’t had much else to announce and so, they decide to have some fun on social media when they announced a trade.

Well sort of… The Bruins posted a TRADE ALERT, in which they only announced that defenseman Andrew Peeke had traded his No. 52 to newly signed forward Sean Kuraly. Peeke will wear No. 26 going forward.

Kuraly wore No. 52 during his first stint with the Bruins from 2016-17 through 2020-21.

Fans in Boston were furious with the post, with many commenting profanities and insults to the team for giving them false hopes.

“Not necessary to do a trade alert like that, “ wrote one.

“Devious work admin,” added another.

“I GASPED SO LOUD WHYD YOU DO THAT?” asked one passionate fan.

“Y’all almost gave me a heart attack with the damn Trade Alert in all caps,” was another comment from an upset fan.

On that same day as they were getting heat for their post on Kuraly and Peeke, the Bruins went on to announce new digits for seven players:

Matej Blumel: 13

Alex Steeves: 21

Victor Soderstrom: 29

Jordan Harris: 43

Viktor Arvidsson: 71

Mikey Eyssimont: 81

Tanner Jeannot: 84

Jeannot will be just the second player in the 100-year history of the franchise to wear No. 84, joining Jarred Tinordi (2021).

Arvidsson has worn No. 33 since 2017 while playing for the Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings and Oilers during that time, but since that number belonged to Bruins legend Zdeno Chara, Arvidsson has picked a new one to begin his Boston career. Wise decision.

I bet fans would have had something to say if he had chosen 33. Can you imagine the comments?

While it’s always fun to find out the numbers of new players joining your favourite team, the fans in Boston are still trying to get over the bad joke by the Bruins.
