Bruce Boudreau was blindsided Friday when he was fired as head coach of the Minnesota Wild.

On Monday, he met with Michael Russo of The Athletic, and revealed to him how it all went down.

“It was funny because (general manager Bill Guerin) came in and he shut the door, and as soon as he shut the door, I knew,” Boudreau said. “You just know, right? And he says, ‘I’m going to make a change,’ and I instantly said, ‘Are you firing me?’ - just like that.
“And he goes, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Are you f——— kidding me?’”
After getting mad at the new GM’s decision, Boudreau went to see the players, told them the news and called his wife.

Then, he didn’t want to be seen. And so he sequestered himself inside his Woodbury house for 51 hours.

“For two days I haven’t shown my face because I don’t want a pity party,” Boudreau said. “Everybody knows me, so it’d be like, ‘Poor you.’”

Though it came as a surprise to Boudreau, he then put two and two together. A GM usually brings on his head coach and knew Bill Guerin would do the same. He just expected to finish the season.

The Wild were 7-3-1 in their last 11 games and inching closer to a playoff spot when they dismissed Boudreau.

The veteran coach hasn’t been without a job for a long time, and we wonder what will be next for the bench boss, who had a reputation as an offensive-minded coach prior to his time in Minnesota, but he built the Wild into an elite defensive team.

Many other clubs in the league might want that on their staff.
