The Boston Bruins have made it official. Brad Marchand is the new franchise’s captain.
The team made the announcement on Wednesday morning with a video entitled "The Legacy Continues."
Marchand takes over for the legendary Patrice Bergeron after his retirement, which he announced this summer.
The new captain is entering his 15th season with the Bruins. He first joined the team as a third-round pick, 71st overall, in the 2006 draft. Since, he has recorded 372 goals and 862 points over 947 career games. He posted 21 goals and 67 points in 73 games last season.
Marchand becomes the third Bruins captain in four years after Bergeron replaced Zdeno Chara in the role in 2020. He won the Stanley Cup alongside both players in 2011.
He is the franchise’s 27th captain in history.
“I am extremely proud of Brad and the hockey player he has become,” said Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs. “Brad has been a Bruin for over 15 years and had the opportunity to learn from great leaders in Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. He is ready for this opportunity and our whole team will learn from his competitive nature and tenacity. I am confident he will represent our organization with heart and grit.”
