Earlier this week, the Florida Panthers had announced that star forward Brad Marchand would not be in the lineup for the team’s game against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night, revealing that there had been a death in the Marchand family and that Brad will take a brief leave of absence from the team in order to attend the funeral and tend to family matters.

On Wednesday, fans found out more about Marchand’s unfortunate absence and the death in his entourage.

Even amid personal grief, Marchand found a way to show compassion and leadership beyond the rink. On Wednesday, it was revealed that he would be coaching in Nova Scotia, stepping in for coach JP MacCallum after the devastating loss of MacCallum’s daughter, Selah.

“He is covering for coach JP MacCallum after the loss of his daughter, Selah,” it has been announced.

The gesture reflects Marchand’s character both on and off the ice. While fans are used to seeing his fiery play and scoring talent, moments like this reveal a deeply human side: someone willing to support friends and colleagues in their time of need, even while navigating his own grief.

We all know how much Marchand loves his children and can't imagine what MacCallum is going through at this time. I'm glad he has close friends around him to support and help him out during this terrible time.

In a sport often defined by intensity and competition, acts of kindness and solidarity like this stand out. Marchand’s decision reminds fans and players alike that hockey isn’t just about goals and wins, but it’s also about community, compassion, and the bonds that make the game meaningful.

In a week shadowed by loss, Marchand’s actions were a bright reminder that class and character can shine as brightly as talent on the ice.

Hockey is family.
