The Panthers forward couldn't resist taking a shot at the Leafs star, even while recovering from surgery.
Brad Marchand may be sidelined after offseason surgery, but the Florida Panthers forward is clearly keeping busy by doing what he does best: getting under his opponents' skin. This time, his target was Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander, and the platform was Instagram.
The NHL's official Instagram account shared a photo of Nylander putting in work during the offseason, showing the Leafs star mid-lift as he prepares for the upcoming 2026-27 campaign. It didn't take long for Marchand to hop into the comments with a classic jab.
"Don't hurt yourself with all that weight willy," Marchand wrote, delivering the kind of lighthearted trash talk that has made him one of the league's most notorious chirpers over the years.
The timing of Marchand's trolling is particularly noteworthy given his current health situation. The veteran forward recently revealed in a video posted to social media that he had undergone surgery during the offseason. He had been dealing with an undisclosed issue for several months toward the end of the 2025-26 season, something head coach Paul Maurice acknowledged publicly at the time.
Marchand explained that he initially attempted to manage the problem without going under the knife but ultimately decided that surgery was unavoidable, noting that it had to be done on short notice. The exact nature of the procedure has not been disclosed, and there is no firm timeline for his return to the ice.
With Panthers training camp set to open within the next month, the clock is ticking. Florida is scheduled to kick off the regular season on Sept. 29 with a matchup against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. Whether Marchand will be ready for that opener remains uncertain.
What is clear, however, is that his competitive fire and trademark personality are fully intact, surgery or not. Even from the sidelines, Marchand continues to keep the hockey world entertained with his antics.
Fans hoping to see Marchand and Nylander go head to head on the ice will have to wait a bit. The Panthers and Maple Leafs are not scheduled to face each other until Dec. 3, when Florida travels to Toronto for what should be a highly anticipated matchup.
By that point, the Panthers will be hoping their star forward is fully healthy and back in the lineup. Given the history between these two Atlantic Division rivals, and Marchand's well-documented love of getting under the skin of opposing players, that December game could carry a little extra spice thanks to this offseason exchange.
For now, Marchand appears content to do his trash-talking from the comment section. And knowing him, this probably won't be the last time he stirs the pot before the puck drops on the new season.
