The St. Louis Blues are getting some help from former NHL forward and two-time Stanley Cup champion Brad Richards.
Late on Tuesday, the Blues fired Craig Berube who led the team to its only Stanley Cup title in 2019. The announcement was made after a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. The loss was the season-worst fourth straight for the Blues, who are off to a 13-14-1 start to the season.
On Wednesday, general manager Doug Armstrong confirmed that Drew Bannister, coach of the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (the Blues’ affiliate), would take over as interim coach.
BUT he also said that the Blues hired Richards as a consultant to look at the team’s powerplay, send suggestions, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Richards played under Armstrong in Dallas where the forward landed after his Stanley Cup run with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Richards won the Conn Smythe trophy in that run and was the first winner in Lightning history. He is one of only six players in Tampa Bay to record over 200 power-play points with the club. He also received the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy that year as the league's most sportsmanlike player.
The retired forward also won a Stanley Cup in 2015 with the Chicago Blackhawks. He hung up the skates after a 15-season NHL career, playing for the Lightning, Stars, New York Rangers, Hawks and Detroit Red Wings. He finished his NHL career with 932 points in 1,126 games played, including 298 goals. In the playoffs, Richards tallied 105 points in 146 games.
The Blues' power-play currently ranks among the league's worst and Richards is expected to come in with much-needed solutions.
