NHL insider reveals first details of how the Leafs GM reacted to the controversy.
The fallout stemming from the on-ice incident last week that prematurely put an end to the season of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been incredible to see unfold. The incident has reached far and wide, well beyond the Toronto hockey market, and is likely to have long term ramifications for the Maple Leafs, the National Hockey League, any many of those who were directly involved in the incident itself.
While we know how fans and pundits alike feel about this one, what we have heard very little about until now was how the Maple Leafs themselves reacted internally to the incident. On Monday morning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared for the first time details about how Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving exploded behind the scenes.
"After I spoke about it on Saturday night somebody else called me about another fact I wanted to throw in," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "I heard Brad Treliving was absolutely wild about what happened on Thursday night."
Friedman stressed that his source was not Treliving himself, but it was clear that the source was someone very close to the Maple Leafs general manager given the level of detail the insider went into next.
"I didn't realize this but [Treliving] wasn't there, he was out scouting," said Friedman. "I heard he was furious and I heard he called, from the road, some of the players involved."
While we would all love to hear what those calls sounded like, Friedman was unable to give any additional details about the nature of the conversations involved.
"I asked what was said and people wouldn't tell me they said they weren't going that far, they weren't revealing the conversations," said Friedman. "But apparently he called some of the players involved from the road."
It sounds like Treliving's reaction may have very much been in line with how much of the team's fan base reacted.
"Someone said to me 'His reaction from the road was really something,'" concluded Friedman.
Wow.
