The Philadelphia Flyers have made a coaching change.
There has been no announcement from the Flyers organization just yet, but National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that a coaching change has indeed been made behind the Flyers bench. According to Friedman, Alain Vigneault has already been relieved of his duties, something that will no doubt come as a relief to anyone who has been watching this Flyers team fall apart as of late.
The Flyers have been on a horrible run of form and have seemingly taken themselves well out of playoff contention this season as a result. Today's announcement comes after the team suffered their 8th loss in a row last night during a 7 - 1 humiliation at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game itself was about as ugly as it gets, although I will admit that it is somewhat difficult to place the blame for some of the things that went down on Vigneault. Flyers goaltender Carter Hart was yanked from the game after a puck handling gaffe that puts Marc-Andre Fleury's recent playoff blunder to shame.
Update: We are now hearing that Flyers assistant coach Michel Therrien has also been relieved of his duties as a part of this coaching change, although it appears as though former St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild head coach Mike Yeo will stay on behind the bench. In fact according to National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli, it sounds like Yeo is expected to take over duties as interim head coach, at least in the short term.
Seravalli is also reporting that the Flyers may already have a coaching candidate in mind, pointing to former Arizona Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet as someone that is likely on general manager Chuck Fletcher's shortlist. There could be other candidates as well, but thus far this is the only name I have seen tossed out there.
We still don't know who will officially replace Vigneault for the time being as we are still awaiting an official announcement from the Flyers.
Update: Charlie O'Connor is echoing the report regarding Yeo taking over as interim head coach.
