Breaking: Andreas Athanasiou has agreed to a new contract!
Keystone Press

The ongoing saga between the Detroit Red Wings and restricted free-agent center Andreas Athanasiou has been one of the most heavily publicized contract disputes of the year, but it sounds like it is finally over.

According to a breaking news report from Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the Detroit Red Wings and Athanasiou's agent have agreed to a new deal that will pay the young center $1.35 million on a one-year-deal.

Considering that this number is just $100,000 off the original offer that Red Wings general manager Ken Holland put on the table this summer, a one-year deal at $1.25 million, one really has to wonder if this contract dispute was really about money.

There were rumors that Athanasiou was unhappy with the way he was being used under head coach Jeff Blashill and we wonder if perhaps there weren't some concessions made by Ken Holland on that front to get him to come back to North America.
