Breaking: Backstrom on the shelf!

The Washington Capitals could have to do without star forward Nicklas Backstrom tonight as they face off against the Vancouver Canucks. 

The 29-year-old is reportedly ill and will be a game-time decision for tonight. The forward did not attend the morning skate earlier today. 

It would be a considerable loss for the Caps. In nine games already this season, Backstrom has recorded three goals and 12 points. 

His remarkable efforts have been rewarded: the star centre was named the NHL's "Third Star" for the week ending Oct. 15.
